Alumni, parents, friends and current sailors. Over the past year we have overcome many trials and tribulations and seen much progress. We have a team of almost 80 students and are still continuing to grow. It has been our goal to be the most open and welcoming team we can be in order to introduce the world of sailing to all who are interested.
The weather this fall semester was astonishing, with warm sunny days where the wind was blowing consistently at least 8 knots. It was beautiful days like this where we had practices with over 50 members in attendance. Sadly this spring semester has not been as ideal as the fall semester. It has been perpetually cold and rainy with about only 4 days where there has actually been good sailing.
In terms of boats we have had an interesting year to say the least. Starting in the fall with one of our FJ masts being sheared, having to call an obstruction in the water to the coast guard and ending with our brand new motorboat being sank by renegade tides. We have made some tremendous acquisitions over the past year though. The Whaler was on its last legs by the end of last spring semester, so we have replaced her with a gorgeous 16-foot custom-built powerboat, named the Labor of Love. After the incident when the Labor of Love sank we have put a lot of work into her and have her up and running again, albeit there is still work that needs to be done on her. We also acquired a new FJ to have for practices, since some of our practices now have over 50 people on attendance we wanted to get as many sailors out there that we can. Finally our most recent acquisition has been new sails. We bought racing sails from the Yale team and after our Boatswain AJ put a lot of love and work into them now look pristine and say UD.
As a team we will continue to try and serve as an outlet for any who are interested in sailing. We will welcome in all newcomers, teach them the basics of sailing as well as an appreciation for the sport and the water. For the more experienced sailors we will continue to hold race practices so they can hone their skills and will always have regattas on the weekends so that as a team we can actively participate in the sport.
Lastly I wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of you who have made this team possible. To the families of our member’s thank you for your support, it goes a tremendous way in providing the facilities and resources that we need to keep the team alive. To our alumni who created, reinforced and grown our club, know that you have given over 80 students at the University of Delaware the ability to learn and be involved with the sailing world, which is an opportunity that is very hard to come by. We are all indebted to you for giving us such a wonderful club, where everyday there is the opportunity to escape the stresses of college life and go out on the water. For that, thank you!

A Note From Your Social Chair's
For the start of the 2011 season we put focus on welcoming the new members of the team and trying to build new bonds between the new and veteran members. To do this we have had several cook outs and even organized a trip into Philadelphia to see a local concert. To continue this effort we have been organizing cookouts that take place after Friday practices and had the best one so far last week with all our sailor friends from Penn State, OCC, and Salisbury. We're having a great time with our old and new members and hope that alumni weekend can bring everyone together for another wicked fun time.
